Platform-mediated gig work has grown from a marginal phenomenon to a significant feature of labour markets in many countries, employing millions through companies such as Uber, Deliveroo, and Upwork. This development carries genuine advantages for some participants while creating serious risks for others that public policy must address.
The primary advantage is flexibility. For certain workers - parents managing childcare commitments, students supplementing income, or skilled freelancers who prefer varied projects over long-term employment - gig arrangements provide genuine autonomy over working hours and location that traditional employment cannot match. This flexibility has expanded labour market participation among groups who were previously constrained by fixed schedules, particularly benefiting secondary earners in households where primary income is already secured. From the perspective of businesses, gig models enable responsive scaling of capacity without the fixed costs of employment, which can support service quality and innovation investment.
The disadvantages, however, are more serious and more broadly felt. Gig workers typically lack the employment rights - sick pay, pension contributions, redundancy protection, and parental leave - that employees receive. This creates a growing segment of the workforce that bears the full cost of illness, economic downturns, and age without institutional support. Income insecurity in gig work is structural rather than transitional: algorithmic management systems can deactivate workers without notice or appeal, and income fluctuates unpredictably with demand and platform changes. Research consistently shows that gig workers earn less per effective hour than comparable employees once platform fees and self-employment taxes are accounted for.
On balance, gig arrangements benefit workers with financial security and flexibility, but impose concentrated costs on those who rely on platform income as a primary livelihood. Regulatory extension of basic employment rights to platform workers is a proportionate and overdue response.
