Band 7.5 Sample Answer

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and robotics has prompted widespread concern that machines will eventually render human workers obsolete. While I acknowledge that automation will profoundly reshape the labour market, I largely disagree that it will replace human workers across most industries.

Admittedly, automation has already displaced large numbers of workers in manufacturing and routine data-processing roles. Assembly-line workers, bank tellers, and customer service agents have seen significant job losses as machines perform repetitive tasks with greater speed and accuracy. Economists estimate that up to 47% of current occupations in developed nations contain tasks highly susceptible to computerisation, suggesting further disruption is inevitable.

However, there are compelling reasons why humans will remain indispensable in the majority of fields. First, many professions depend on creativity, empathy, and ethical judgement — qualities that machines cannot authentically replicate. Teachers who inspire struggling students, doctors who comfort anxious patients, and lawyers who navigate morally ambiguous cases all draw on deeply human capacities. Second, historical evidence suggests that technology creates jobs as rapidly as it destroys them. The internet eliminated entire industries yet simultaneously generated millions of roles in software development, digital marketing, and e-commerce that simply did not exist a generation ago. Third, AI systems still require substantial human oversight to handle exceptions, errors, and novel situations outside their training data.

In conclusion, while automation will undoubtedly eliminate certain categories of work, the complete replacement of human labour across most industries is neither imminent nor inevitable. The more realistic outcome is a transformation of the workforce, with people shifting towards roles that emphasise collaboration with technology rather than competition against it.
