Band 7.5 Model Answer

The place I've always wanted to visit is Patagonia, the vast wilderness region shared by Argentina and Chile at the southern tip of South America. It's about as far from where I live as it's possible to get, which is partly why it's captured my imagination so completely.

I became aware of Patagonia through a documentary series about trekking in remote environments, and the images have stayed with me ever since — enormous glaciers, towers of reddish rock rising thousands of metres above plains, and skies that seem to contain every weather condition simultaneously. The region encompasses some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth, including Torres del Paine National Park in Chile and the Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina.

If I were to visit, I would primarily want to hike. The W Trek in Torres del Paine is one of the most celebrated multi-day trails in the world, taking walkers through forests, past lakes of extraordinary turquoise colour, and to the base of the famous granite towers. I would also want to see the Perito Moreno Glacier — one of the few glaciers in the world that is still advancing rather than retreating, and where the sound of calving ice creates a constant, dramatic backdrop.

I imagine visiting Patagonia would produce a specific feeling I rarely experience in daily life — a genuine sense of smallness. There's something restorative about encountering environments that operate entirely on their own terms, indifferent to human concerns. In a world where almost every surface has been modified or commercialised, Patagonia represents something increasingly rare and, for me, deeply appealing.
