Band 7.5 Model Answer

The journey I'd like to describe was a train trip I took from Mumbai to Goa about three years ago with two close friends. We had planned to fly, as most people do for that route, but a last-minute issue with our tickets led us to book overnight train seats instead — which turned out to be one of the best unplanned decisions I've made in years.

We travelled on the Konkan Railway, which runs along the western coast of India through a stretch of countryside that I think ranks among the most beautiful I've encountered anywhere. The line crosses hundreds of bridges over rivers and inlets, passes through dozens of tunnels carved through the Western Ghats, and winds through forests that appear completely untouched by the intensity of the cities at either end of the journey.

Because the train departed in the evening and arrived the following morning, we spent several hours sitting in the doorway of our carriage as the last light faded, watching fishing villages and paddy fields give way to the shadowed outlines of mountains. There was something about the pace of the train — slow enough to register details that flying obliterates entirely — that created a feeling of genuine transition rather than simple relocation.

My friends and I talked more that evening than we had in months of meeting in cities. There's something about being in motion, with no particular task to complete, that seems to make honest conversation easier.

I remember arriving in Goa feeling genuinely refreshed rather than simply transported, which I don't think a flight would have produced.
