5.5
B1+

Modest User (upper)

Improved basic communicator - some complex language handled but errors remain frequent.

Band 5.5 test-takers are at a transitional level between B1 and B2. They can follow the general thread of most conversations and read moderately complex texts but miss nuance and implicit meaning. Writing begins to show paragraph organisation but coherence devices are overused or mechanical. This band opens Australia's student visa minimum and some foundation programme entry points.

Time to next band: 4-8 weeks (1.5-2 hours/day focused on identified weak skills)

What Band 5.5 Unlocks

UK Student Visa (below degree)

Meets B2 minimum for below-degree level programmes

Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500)

Meets visa grant minimum

Canada Express Entry

Does NOT meet CLB 7 (need 6.0 per skill)

New Zealand Undergraduate

Below typical 6.0 requirement

Why Test-Takers Plateau at Band 5.5

Grammar accuracy: frequent subject-verb agreement, article, and tense errors in Writing and Speaking.

Cohesion: overusing "Furthermore", "Moreover", "In addition" signals formulaic writing to examiners.

Listening Section 3 and 4 accuracy drops significantly compared to Sections 1 and 2.

Speaking Part 3 abstract topic responses are short and struggle to develop ideas.

How to Move Up from Band 5.5

Writing
  • Target coherence first: every paragraph should have one clear topic sentence followed by evidence and explanation.
  • Replace 3 overused connectives with more precise alternatives: instead of "Furthermore" try "What is more striking is that…"
  • Study one Band 7 model essay per day - mark the topic sentences in each paragraph.
Speaking
  • Practise extending every answer with a reason + example: "I think X because… For instance…"
  • Record Part 3 responses targeting 90+ seconds - short responses cap your score at 5.5.
Reading
  • Practise True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given under timed conditions - these are the most common error types at this band.
  • Read the question stem before reading the passage - directed reading beats passive reading.
Listening
  • Specifically drill Section 3 (academic discussion) - two or more speakers with academic vocabulary.
  • Practise note completion and table completion forms before moving to harder question types.
