Band 7.5 Sample Answer

The rising prevalence of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions across both developed and developing nations represents one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time. Multiple intersecting causes drive this trend, and addressing it requires responses at individual, institutional, and societal levels.

Contemporary patterns of work and social life contribute significantly to deteriorating mental health. Increasing job insecurity, longer working hours, and the blurring of professional and personal boundaries — intensified by digital technology — create chronic stress that erodes psychological resilience over time. Social media usage, particularly among adolescents, has been linked to heightened anxiety and depression through mechanisms including social comparison, cyberbullying, and disrupted sleep. Urban loneliness — paradoxically concentrated in densely populated cities where meaningful community ties have weakened — also exacts a measurable mental health toll.

Effective responses must address both root causes and access to support. Employers can implement evidence-based workplace wellbeing programmes, including reasonable workload expectations, flexible arrangements, and psychological safety norms that allow employees to discuss difficulties without fear of professional consequences. Governments must invest substantially in mental health services: in many countries, psychiatric and therapeutic support is inaccessible for people without private insurance or sufficient income, meaning those most affected by poverty and precarity face the greatest barriers to care. Education systems can build mental health literacy into curricula, equipping young people with emotional regulation skills before problems become entrenched.

Reducing the persistent stigma associated with mental illness remains essential, as shame prevents many people from seeking help until their condition has severely deteriorated.
