Band 7.5 Sample Answer

Immigration has reshaped societies across the world, bringing both significant benefits and notable challenges to receiving nations. A balanced assessment requires examining economic, cultural, and social dimensions.

The economic case for immigration is well-supported by evidence. Immigrants often fill critical labour shortages in both high-skill sectors, such as medicine, engineering, and technology, and in essential low-wage industries including agriculture, hospitality, and elder care. Studies in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Germany consistently show that immigrants contribute more in taxes than they consume in public services over their working lives, thereby supporting the fiscal sustainability of ageing societies. Culturally, immigration enriches host nations through new cuisines, languages, artistic traditions, and perspectives, fostering the creative diversity associated with economically dynamic cities like London, Toronto, and Amsterdam.

However, immigration also creates pressures that require careful management. Rapid population growth in specific regions can strain housing markets, schools, and healthcare systems, particularly when public investment fails to keep pace. Some economists argue that high immigration levels in low-skill sectors can suppress wages for native workers already earning below-average incomes. Cultural and linguistic differences, if poorly managed, can create friction within communities and complicate social cohesion, especially in areas receiving large numbers of arrivals in a short period.

On balance, the advantages of immigration tend to outweigh its disadvantages when accompanied by proactive integration policies, adequate investment in public services, and labour market protections. The evidence from countries with successful immigration programmes suggests that the key variable is not whether immigration occurs but how effectively it is managed.
