IELTS Requirements for Canada Immigration & Study

CLB 7 = 6.0 minimum per skill

• CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 in each skill) is the minimum to enter the Express Entry pool.
• Each CLB level above 7 adds significant CRS points - worth more than most other factors.
• CLB 9 in all four skills (IELTS ~7.5/7.0/7.5/7.5) earns 124 CRS points for first official language.
• You can include a second language (French) for up to 30 additional points.

Processing time: 6-8 months

University minimum - visa itself has no IELTS requirement

• IRCC does not set an IELTS minimum for the study permit itself.
• Each institution sets its own requirement - typically 6.0-7.0 overall.
• University of Toronto, UBC, McGill: 6.5-7.0 minimum.
• Colleges and polytechnics: usually 6.0 overall.
• Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) follows automatically after completing a qualifying program.

Processing time: 4-16 weeks

No federal IELTS requirement; CLB 5 typical for LMIA applications

• IRCC does not require IELTS for most temporary work permits.
• Employers may require IELTS depending on the role.
• Certain regulated occupations (nursing, teaching) have their own language requirements.
• LMIA-exempt permits (ICT, CUSMA) rarely require an IELTS score.

Varies by province; CLB 7 common baseline

• Each province sets its own language requirement - Ontario Tech typically wants CLB 7+, Saskatchewan requires CLB 4-7 depending on occupation.
• PNP nomination adds 600 CRS points, making it one of the most valuable Express Entry pathways.
• Some PNP streams are outside Express Entry (provincial-only) and have lower language bars.
• Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP): CLB 4-5 minimum depending on the occupation tier.
