How do you do well in IELTS Speaking Part 2?

IELTS Speaking Part 2 gives you a cue card topic and 1 minute of preparation before a 1-2 minute monologue. Use the preparation minute to jot 3-4 bullet-point keywords - not full sentences - that will anchor your talk. Cover all bullet points on the card, aim to speak for at least 1 minute 45 seconds, and extend your answer by adding personal reactions or comparisons if you finish early.

  • Use prep time to write keywords only - reading full sentences sounds rehearsed and lowers fluency score
  • Cover all prompt bullet points - missing one reduces Task Achievement
  • Extend your answer: add your reaction, a comparison, or why the topic matters to you
  • Aim for 1 min 45 sec to 2 min - stopping before 1 min signals poor fluency
